Tourism statistics for local planning: challenges and proposals
2011
The increasing importance of tourism in many urban and rural areas has called into question the adequacy of official statistical sources for specific local needs. However, several problems affect actual official statistics in tourism which make them inappropriate for destination management purposes. The present work starts from a simple question about the actual number of tourists in a given destination by formalizing the answer through a conceptual model which links official statistics available at local level with the tourism trips undertaken in the destination considered. The relevance of several parameters and quantities is highlighted and some proposals for their estimate are made. The…
L’industria dei viaggi e del turismo in Italia: aspetti definitori, dinamiche intersettoriali ed effetti della crisi
2022
The travel and tourism industry has an increasingly central role in countries’ economies due to its ability to contribute significantly to the production of various economic sectors. Despite this growing importance, the literature’s attention to analysing the productive articulations that characterise appears very limited to date. This article presents an overview of the primary lit- erature on the travel and tourism industry and then conducts a quantitative analysis through the Satellite Accounting of Tourism in Italy. Tourism consumption and production in the years 2010, 2015, 2017 and 2019 are compared, and then the effect of the pandemic is analysed by compar- ing the data in 2020. Fina…
Sustainability and tourist flow networks: a mean field bi-level optimization approach
The widespread acknowledgement of tourism as a strategic pillar for economic growth and development has boosted competitiveness among tourist destinations. This concept has been greatly emphasized during the current COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Nevertheless, the massive presence of tourists imposes the challenge of adopting sustainable tourism practices to balance economic prosperity opportunities with potential threats to the environment and local communities. There are many definitions for sustainability, but the most effective one is ``the capacity to endure'' [Emel et al, 1997]: from an economic perspective this leads to find an equilibrium between short and long-term objectives so that to…

A Relational Approach to Networks in a Tourism Destination: Business and Family Networks in San Vito Lo Capo, Sicily
2022
This article constructs a relational framework using the principles of the Network Approach to examining the business exchange structure of a tourist destination. Network Analysis is the methodology to analyse the metrics of collaboration and cooperation among destination companies. The model was applied in a remote tourist destination named San Vito Lo Capo on the island of Sicily, where tourism has significantly expanded in the last twenty years. The focus is on how groupings of small companies within family relations can govern and be responsible for tourism destination cooperation. As the main result, the existence was identified, of a relational framework where three clusters of famili…
INEQUALITIES AND TOURISM CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOUR: A MIXTURE MODEL ANALYSIS
2015
The criticism of income as a measure of well-being and trends in living standards is well known and recently scholars have been involved in defining measures to better assess material well-being and differences in living standards. Recent evidence shows that individuals improve their well-being significantly if they are able to spend on higher-order goods and services like tourism and leisure activities. In the light of that, our study proposes to explore differences in living standards in Italy by analysing the distribution of tourism expenditure. For this aim, Mixtures of Regression Models were used in order to investigate whether there is an unobserved heterogeneity in tourism consumptio…
The Importance of Internal Resources and Capabilities and Destination Resources to Explain Firm Competitive Position in the Spanish Tourism Industry
2015
This study draws on the Resource-Based View to analyze the effects of distinctive competences in tourism firms and location in a tourism district on competitive position, and explores the moderating effects of the tourism destination. Multiple linear regression was used to test the research hypotheses on a sample of 1019 Spanish tourism firms. Results reveal that financial resources and dynamic and production capabilities favor a better competitive position for tourism firms in general; however, coordination and marketing capabilities are key factors for firms embedded in a tourism district, while dynamic capabilities have a negative effect in this case. Tourism Development: Concepts and Issues
2015
The central issues proposed revolve around the concept of development itself, which has evolved from mere economic growth to a more “holistic” definition encompassing social, cul- tural, political and environmental aspects. The volume chooses to concentrate on development strategies, that is, the means of improving the development process through a specific “ideol- ogy”, since development, as often argued in the book, is a value-laden concept. If tourism can and is to be an agent of development, the book then clarifies the theoretical stands behind the term “development”, as well as the ideology behind the strategy leading to tourism develop- ment. The issues discussed in the book therefore…
